  Development of a Child
This article helps a new mother to understand in stages how development of a child takes place. It will help new-mothers in understanding the daily progress of the child. After reading this article they will stop worrying about the child. The following physical changes will ensure proper development of a child.

1) Weight: In the first seven days, the weight of a child reduces by about 10 percent it's original weight at birth. That is, it reduces by about 250 to 300 gm. But in the next 10 days it regains it's weight and then the weight gradually starts increasing. At the end of the month you can see an increase of 500 gm in weight. For the first 4 to 5 months the weight increases 30 gm/day which is approximately 800 to 1000 gm in a month.

2) Height: For a normal child, the height at birth is around 51 cm. Then for every month it increases by about 2.5 cm. The rate of growth of height is more between 11 and 14 years.

3) Head Size: The development of a child brain can be said to be proportional to the increase in head size. At birth the head is about 32 to 36 cm. At the end of the month it increases by about 2 to 2.5 cm. Then onwards it keeps increasing by 2 cm for the next six months.

4) Chest Size: At birth the size of the chest is smaller than the head size. But it then increases and becomes larger than the head size.

5) Child Reflex: After birth whether the child is mentally developing or not can be understood by the following reflexes:
a) Rooting Reflex: If you place your finger on the cheek of a child it will start moving it's mouth towards your finger. This helps the child in finding mother's milk.

b) Sucking Reflex: If you put your finger in the child's mouth it starts sucking the finger.

c) Grasping Reflex: Put some object in between the hands of the child. The child will now grasp the object with his fingers. Similarly if you place the object at it's feet, the child will try to move it's fingers and grasp it.

d) Walking Reflex: Hold the child beneath his shoulders. Keep it  standing on bed. If you now gently touch the child's feet to bed, it will start moving it's feet as if the child wants to walk.

e) Moro Reflex: If there is a loud sound or if you push the child then it shrugs the body. The child moves it's hands and feet as if hold something.

Following symptoms can be seen if brain and tissues of a child are developing normally:
1) The child moves it's legs, hands and head in air.
2) If the child is laid flat it tries to move the head towards one side.
3) The child starts crying if it gets wet or is hungry.
4) Some children move their eyes along with the objects that move in front of their eyes.
5) If you make some noise, say you blow whistle, you can mark changes in the child's face.
6) If everything is fine for the child then it stops crying as soon as we pick the child.
7) The child starts recognizing it's mother and starts laughing with her.

This development of a child depends on the surrounding conditions, child's strength and also on the love and affection shown to the child.

If you can see following development of a child, then you can believe that your child development is fine:
1) In the third month child starts to hear and shows moro reflex.
2) In the fourth month he starts to move forward, i.e., crawls.
3) In the sixth month child can sit.
4) In the eight month child can stand on his feet.
5) At the beginning of first year the child begins to walk.
6) In the second year he begins to talk.

Various Stages in Development of a Child
The development of a child takes place in stages. Particular growth takes place at particular period of time. Following are the various stages in development of a child:
1) In the third month the child is able balance it's head.
2) In about six months from birth the child learns to sit.
3) In the ninth month, the child learns to stand.
4) Month ten to year one, the child learns to walk by holding things around.
5) In twelve to fourteen months the child learns to walk independently. Also the child can say two-letter words like Ma-Ma-Ma, Da-Da-Da.
6) In month fifteen the child learns few words. If the child is not able to speak at all when he/she is eighteen months old then there are two possibilities. One is that the child is not able to hear. The other possibility may be some defect in the throat. Immediately visit your doctor for advice.
7) Teeth can be seen when the child is around six month old.
