A woman is said to be pregnant if she is
carrying one or more offspring, known as fetus or embryo, inside her
uterus. This happens during sexual intercourse, when a male sperm
unites with a female gamete or egg.
Pregnancy and Menstrual Cycle
Menstrual Cycle is a cyclic change or development which takes place
inside a woman's body. To be pregnant or to avoid pregnancy one
needs to understand the menstrual cycle well. Understanding
menstrual cycle helps in determining woman's best fertile days or
her ovulation period, thus increasing her chances of getting
pregnant. One must know that there are approximately 7 days during a
woman's menstrual cycle which can be said to be the fertile period
for pregnancy. The day when a woman releases egg is the first
fertile period. The day after the egg released is the second fertile
period. The third fertile period is the 7 days before the egg is
released. The egg released is very short-lived and is said to be
alive for 24 hours only. Hence the chances of getting pregnant
decreases soon after the egg have been released. So, one can
understand how short the fertile period is. Also the menstrual
cycles are irregular in different women. So a woman needs to
understand her menstrual cycle and predict her ovulation period,
thereby enhancing the chances of getting pregnant.
We can divide the menstrual cycle into 2 parts. The first part is
the pre-ovulation. During pre-ovulation bleeding begins on Day 1
which may last for 3 to 5 days. Between the 7th and 11th day,
changes in the menstrual fluids takes place. The egg in the ovaries
ripens and is released after the 11th day. The egg then enters the
fallopian tubes.
The second part is called post-ovulation. When ovulation is about to
occur, woman may feel increase in their body temperature. If now a
sperm unites with the egg and fertilization occurs then one can say
that pregnancy has begun. But if the egg does not get fertilize, it
dies in 24 hours and the menstrual cycle repeats.
The release of egg or ovulation for women with a menstrual cycle of
28 days should occur on the 14th day. So a woman wanting to be
pregnant should start having physical relationship on alternate
days, starting from the 10th day of her menstrual cycle.
Yes. Woman is Pregnant.
If a normal woman has missed her menstrual period, then one can
think that there are chances of her being pregnant. If she has also
missed her second menstrual period then the chances are more likely
that she is pregnant. There are various pregnancy tests available in
the market which one can buy and test oneself for positive results.
